At a meal with Pharisees, Jesus gives two parallel parables to the guests and the host in Luke 14:7-14. He encourages the guests to choose humble seats and wait for the host to exalt them. He encourages the host to invite the poor and be repaid by God in the resurrection. Together, we see Christ encouraging them to a life of humility manifested through generosity to the poor that awaits repayment in God’s kingdom.
