Day 5 | Psalm 62
The COVID-19 coronavirus does not discriminate. It moves impartially through households, cities, states, and countries. Its malevolent intentions are not strategic. It wreaks havoc throughout the world without prejudice. Neither race nor riches matter. Such an indiscriminate threat affirms that: “Common people are only a vapor; important people, an illusion. Together on a scale, they weigh less than vapor” (Psalm 62:9).
When confronted with the sobering reality of such an indiscriminate threat, some may be tempted to buoy themselves amidst the fears and anxieties by taking up oppressive tactics. But, let’s “place no trust in oppression, or false hope in robbery” (Psalm 62:10). No amount of wealth or status can curb COVID-19’s infectious ambitions. The virus’s malevolent nature shows no partiality.
The only way to find rest in the face of an indiscriminate threat is by taking refuge in an indiscriminate Savior. God shows no partiality in either judgment or salvation. His movement throughout the world is not lacking strategy or purpose. He intends to redeem people from every nation, tribe, language, and tongue. No aspect of a person’s earthly status will enable them to escape judgment or enjoy salvation. When all is said and done, neither race nor riches will matter.
We are all equal before the threat posed by COVID-19, and we are all equal before the salvation provided by God. The realities of sin and grace are what account for a truly egalitarian world. Anyone may internalize the words of David for his or her self, “Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge” (Psalm 62:5-8).
God’s impartial nature and purposes are ultimately revealed in the makeup of the church where “there is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). The only status that matters in the end is if you are in Christ or outside of Christ. Anyone and everyone can take refuge in Christ for God shows no partiality. In Christ, neither race nor riches matters.
